Beginners Guide to Home Décor

To quote every interior decorating magazine ever “Home is where the heart is”. It is our space to relax, let down our walls and be comfortable. However, decorating your home to meet these expectations can sometimes seem like a daunting task and it can be difficult to know where to begin. People often want their homes to be an outward reflection of their personalities and tastes, and figuring out how to merge that to create a gorgeous living space is time consuming. But don’t worry, we’re here to break it down into a few simple tips and tricks to make the whole process a little bit easier.

1. Create a colour palette

The first place to start, as any interior decorator will tell you is deciding what colours you want to see in your home, be it a combination of your favourite colours or an assortment of colours that create the kind of look you are hoping to give your house. Different colours have different effects on individuals, and carry different meanings and emotions. Blue is seen to be associated with calmness and serenity but can also come across as cold and corporate. Green strikes the eye directly because it falls in the middle of the colour spectrum, making it the colour of balance and nature, however if used incorrectly can lead to feelings of stagnation. Cool colours like blue and green are associated with serenity and thought to increase creativity, while warm colours like red, orange and yellow are known to increase activity and hunger and spark passionate emotions. Taking all of this into account, when it comes to wall colour, pick it last to link it with the rest of your colour palette and furniture instead of the other way around.

2. Create a focal point(s)

A focal point is an object that stands out from the background to draw the attention of the eye. This can be because of either size or colour or both. You can choose to have either one focal point in the middle of the room or multiple focal points scattered on all sides of the room to ensure the décor of the room is appreciated in its entirety. Cushions can be affordable and attractive focal points of a room. Though small in size, a vivid, electric, contrastingly coloured cushion can be just as effective in directing the eye as a large piece of furniture.

3. Think about landscapes

When decorating a room, it is important to think about the landscape of the room. Rather than keeping it looking like a meadow (i.e. everything at one height), aim to keep your room looking like a city skyline (i.e. furniture pieces of different heights) to keep the eye shifting from piece to piece rather than stagnant. Pieces of different heights can create subtle contrast and dimension to allow for a more holistic visual experience. This can be done in different ways, for example if you have a low sofa, add in a tall floor lamp into your room or high tables to create a myriad of heights and shapes. Conversely If you have a high sofa, creating a bed of floor cushions can help to direct the eye downwards.

4. Textures

Go beyond mixing and matching colours to bring a room to life and consider mixing textures to the room. Achieve a new level of balance and complexity in the visual by getting furniture pieces with contrasting fabrics and textures. Mix a rough sofa fabric like linen with an ultra-smooth polysilk cushion or a smooth leather chair with a textured polka dotted cushion.

5. Symmetry without matching

You can use symmetry to embody the kind of style you want your room to exude. Modern styles tend to favour odd numbers, this can be represented in small ways through the number of cushions you have on your sofa (3, 5 etc.) to the way you group your table decorations and in large ways through works of art, seating arrangements and tables. Conversely a more traditional style home will be decorated in even number combinations (2, 4 etc.), again through the number of sofa cushions, table decorations and works of art.

After reading through all of this, remember: your home should be decorated in a way that makes you happy, rules be damned, because ultimately you are the one who has to live in it!
